The Keeping Room Presents: McGovern String Band

Fri, May 3rd, 2024, 7:00 PM
The Keeping Room , Nebraska City, NE

The McGovern Stringband is an acoustic americana and bluegrass all string band – featuring the vocals of father & son, Kelly McGovern (guitar) and Brian McGovern (mandolin). The McGovern String Band combines a wide variety of genres with a bluegrass style that is anchored by the Nebraska Performing Arts Hall of Fame inductees: bass player and vocalist Dave Morris and Fuzzy Blazek on dobro steel, along with the great Daren Blythe on 5 string banjo.

Their three and four part harmonies, combined with a percussive acoustic instrumentation, bring back that legendary high lonesome sound of Bluegrass.

The Keeping Room Presents: Jack Hotel

Fri, Jun 7th, 2024, 7:00 PM
The Keeping Room , Nebraska City, NE

Jack Hotel contains multitudes. A listen to the band’s discography reveals a range that encompasses Ry Cooder and Leo Kottke, Gillian Welch and Townes Van Zandt, Mississippi John Hurt and Etta Baker–but this band is no mere product of its influences. Since their start in 2012, Jack Hotel has proven itself one of the best, and most original, folk/Americana acts in the midwest. A storyteller’s sensibility prevails in their songs. Bandleader Günter Voelker writes with a novelist’s powers of observation and a poet’s ear for language. Instrumentation meets the same standard. Each addition serves the song, advances the story, or drives home the emotion. Jack Hotel has earned respect on both regional and national stages, performing alongside such acts as Darrell Scott, J.D. McPherson, Cactus Blossoms, Frontier Ruckus, and Charlie Parr. In 2014 they opened for Willie Nelson and Neil Young at Nebraska’s Harvest the Hope concert. Following the success of their first record, Good Sons and Daughters (which landed a #3 spot on Hear Nebraska’s Favorite Albums of 2014), Voices from the Moon won an Omaha Entertainment and Arts Awards for Album of the Year. The band also won OEAAs for Best Americana/Folk Band two years in a row. They just released their third record, A Town Called Hesitation, in June of 2020.

Starting at the age of 4yrs old in Norfolk, Nebraska, he now releases records, runs a record label called Sower Records, makes films and videos, and writes…both music and literature. Being a musician and artist, now living in Nebraska, he also owns a creative marketing company called Red Rebel Media. For him, Nebraska, has been a fertile ground for growth and creativity. The strong sense of community that exists in Lincoln and surrounding towns has been the driving force to create.
In 2014, Semrad started a record label called Sower Records, in which they just released their 30th offering. The stable of musicians, along with other local artists, and area advocacy groups, including Bold Nebraska and Nebraskan native tribes, recently organized a concert to stop the Keystone XL pipeline, a nasty pipeline that was slated to ship crude oil from Canada through the US, only to risk the clean water that is vital for the common farmer’s irrigation. The concert that took place in Neligh, Nebraska in the middle of a cornfield, and was called ‘Harvest the Hope’. Willie Nelson and Neil Young were the featured performers, along with Mike’s band The Bottle Tops and other local artists. Their collective efforts, along with over 9,000 supporters helped to raise over $800,000 for the cause.
Semrad continues to organize groups of like-minded creatives to make positive change across the nation. The recent solo release entitled ‘Cloud or Mountain’, named after a poem by Bil Johnson(Wahoo, Ne.), was released in January of 2018. This will be the first full-length record by Mike Semrad outside of previous bands. (The Bottle Tops, The Riverhawks, Haywood Yards, The Semrad Brothers)

Jon Dell is an American songwriter, guitarist, and music educator. Currently based in Brooklyn, his upcoming release “I Love You & Wish You The Best” explores weighty topics such as terminal disease, lost love, second chances and most things in between. All this, while still maintaining his trademark gallows humor. The fact that his songs tread the line between dolor and blissful jubilance so well is a testament to Dell’s deftness as a storyteller and his uncommon sensibilities as a songwriter. Having played in bands since his early teens, he has played hundreds of shows coast to coast, sharing the stage with artists such as Charley Crockett, BJ Barham, Justin Wells, Wayne "The Train" Hancock, and many, many others. He is preparing for a deluge of tour dates in the fall in 2023, be sure to keep a weather eye open.
